Ruggero Cortini

Data Scientist · Biophysicist · Consultant
I’m a Barcelona-based data scientist with a PhD in biophysics from Imperial College London and five years’ consulting experience at SIRIS Academic. I help pharma, biotech, and research organisations turn complex scientific data into decisions — most recently through NLP and ML pipelines over biomedical literature, patents, and clinical trials. I’m currently exploring new roles in pharma/biotech consulting and applied ML.
What I do
- Applied ML & AI systems — end-to-end pipelines, LLM applications, agent frameworks
- Data science consulting — translating pharma/biotech problems into analytical solutions
- Scientific computing — biophysics-informed modelling, genomics data analysis
Selected projects
- European University Alliances Observatory — redesigned a 10-pipeline Mage AI backend integrating 6 international data sources to power a research analytics platform for European universities
- Industrial water consumption in Catalonia — combining three Catalan open data sources to map how industrial water use is concentrated across the region
- Population density and building age in Barcelona — bivariate choropleth analysis of urban structure across Barcelona’s 1,068 census sections
- Open Access status of publications in time — tracking how open-access publishing practices have evolved from 2015 to 2025
- Chess game analytics with Stockfish — end-to-end pipeline from the chess.com API through Stockfish engine evaluation to move-quality patterns across hundreds of games
- Parsing the IPC patent classification tree — self-contained Python notebook that reconstructs full descriptions for all 79,000+ IPC symbols and exports them to Google Sheets
- Transcription factor dynamics on folded chromatin — GPU-accelerated simulation framework for studying protein search on 3D chromatin; published in Nature Communications
